02/22/2011Door-to-Door Magazine Scamnews.aspx?PUBID=3&MASTER=ThirdThis is a Public ALERT for All Citizens of Benton County. The Benton County Sheriff’s Office would like to ALERT the public to be aware of scam groups in the area going Door-to-Door claiming to sell magazine subscriptions. These groups have already been seen in areas of Northwest Arkansas. They have used titles such as All Star Subscriptions and Cross Roads Subscriptions but could be using a different name. The scam usually involves young children selling subscriptions for magazines in order to win some type of vacation trip. The seller will often times ask for a small down payment. Unfortunately, you will never receive your subscription. These people will also often times ask to come inside your home with the intention of looking for items of value. We have had several people burglarized in the past few weeks. These groups have also been known to take whatever items they can carry by hand including pets. Please be aware that these groups are in our area. If you come into contact with any of these individuals, try to get as much information as you can such as description of the individual, vehicle description, and direction of travel. Just be observant and ask specific questions. If they can not answer those questions then it could be a scam. If you have any information on these individuals please contact the Benton County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division at 479-271-1009.
11/01/2010Jury Scamnews.aspx?PUBID=11&MASTER=ThirdThe phone rings, you pick it up, and the caller identifies himself as an officer of the court. He says you failed to report for jury duty and that a warrant is out for your arrest. You say you never received a notice. To clear it up, the caller says he'll need some information for "verification purposes" your birth date, social security number, maybe even a credit card number. This is when you should hang up the phone. It's a scam. Jury scams have been around for years, but have seen a resurgence in recent months. Communities in more than a dozen states have issued public warnings about cold calls from people claiming to be court officials seeking personal information. As a rule, court officers never ask for confidential information over the phone, they generally correspond with prospective jurors via mail. Benton County Sheriff Keith Ferguson reminds citizens protecting yourself is the key: NEVER give out personal information when you receive an unsolicited phone call. EVER!!!! Deputy Doug Gay
